What is yoga?
The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. A union of the mind and body. What is commonly referred to as "yoga" can be more accurately described by the Sanskrit word asana, which refers to the practice of physical postures or poses. Asana is only one of the eight "limbs" of yoga. In the West, however, asana and yoga are often used synonymously. The goal of yoga is to unite the body and mind to realize the spiritual essence of being. Body, Mind & Spirit.
What is Yoga Asanas (Postures)
Some consider yoga as stretching the muscles and that is correct but incomplete. Asana practice is creating balance, strength and flexibility through a series of movements (poses) coordinated with your breath in addition to meditation and mantras.
What does Yoga Practice Mean?
Yogis often refer to "your practice," which means your individual experience with yoga as it develops over time. The amazing thing about yoga is your practice is a constant evolution of yourself. Liberating yourself from your ego and doing what you can on any given day.
Yoga Class Structure:
In addition to practicing asanas (postures), our classes may include instruction on breathing (pranayama), call and response peace chants (mantra meditation), meditation, and/or inspirational readings by the teacher. At Tina Loren Yoga, we attempt to always provide English translations to Sanskrit words. Please ask for translations if one is not given.
What do I wear?
Looking good gets you no where! Wear what you have and show up to your mat. Here are some tips.
Ladies: Remove your make-up and pull your hair back. Yoga pants are most comfortable because there are no seams. A tight fitting sports top will minimize fussing with pulling your shirt down over your stomach while upside down.
Men: Shorts (loose or tight) with minimal seams and a snug fitting shirt to avoid it falling over your head while upside down. Many men simply practice without a shirt.

Is Yoga a Religion?
Yoga is not a religion although yoga is in some religions. In our practice of yoga we will learn to become closer to Source; that Source may be called God to some, the Self to others, and so on. This topic is a never ending discussion among philosophers and Tina Loren Yoga does not take a religious position. However, we guide students to experience their unique truth through yoga. Our goal is to quiet the mind, gently release judgments and observe what happens on and off the mat. For those needing a deeper explanation, you are encouraged to practice the second of the eight limbs of yoga - Niyamas (codes of conduct). The third niyama being Svadhyaya (self study). Read, ask questions, meditate, research and meditate some more. Happy studying!

How often should I practice?
You are encouraged to practice 6 days a week until you feel in great health then you may practice 3 times a week for maintenance. As a new student, my teacher encourages 10 classes in 10 days and I've seen dramatic results from students that adhere to that rule. Showing up to your mat is your practice so take an hour of Shavasana if needed, just show up every day. "The days when you least feel like practicing are the days you need it most".
Can I practice during my moon cycle?
Women can take 2-3 days off or choose to practice. When you menstruate, the forces in your body are trying to move down and out (apana). Our practice tends to lift energy up towards our navel center. Many yoga postures promote relaxation of the uterine muscles and may ease symptoms. Inversions are discouraged but follow your body's needs and discover what works for you.
What is the meaning of the number 108 in Yoga?
Renowned mathematicians of Vedic culture viewed 108 as a number of the wholeness of existence. This number also connects the Sun, Moon, and Earth: The average distance of the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters. Such phenomena have given rise to many examples of ritual significance. According to yogic tradition, there are 108 pithas, or sacred sites, throughout India. And there are also 108 Upanishads and 108 marma points, or sacred places of the body.

What is Ujjayi Pranayama?
Ujjayi Pranayama is Sanskrit for victorious breath. When done properly, it is energizing, relaxing and internalizes the senses. The sound of Ujjayi is created by gently constricting the opening of the throat to create some resistance to the passage of air. This resistance makes your breathing sound similar to Darth Vader. It is especially recommended for those who suffer insomnia and mental tension. However, anyone with low blood pressure must first correct their condition before taking up the practice. Ujjayi is the foundation of our asana practice. Some get it quickly, while others it takes a while. Be patient with your practice. It will come.
